The extreme lack of diversity at Saint Norbert College is becoming more and more problematic. But there are many people that believe the lack of diversity among our schools is not a significant problem in today’s culture. Wolfgang Grassl is one of these critics of diversity: “The destructive quest for artificial diversification is an outgrowth of the scourge of the twentieth century—the all‐pervasive creed of relativism.” They believe that people should model a society in which people in that society should have similar identities and backgrounds. They don’t believe it is a catholic value. Though some people believe this observation that lack of diversity in today’s society is a good thing, the lack of diversity in today’s environment hurts the society more than most people would assume. The lack of diversity here at St. Norbert’s, may hurt students ability in and especially outside the classroom. Diversity overall helps students develop their knowledge and test their beliefs. It does this by: enabling them to become conscious learners and critical thinkers, Students learn more and think in deeper and more complex ways in a diverse educational environment and Students educated in diverse settings are better able to participate in political and nonpolitical events. Allowing for St. Norbert’s to develop into a more diverse school, will allow students to broaden their knowledge and turn them into well rounded people.
Lack of diversity is a real problem at SNC, no matter what type of diversity is being talked about. St Norbert’s has never been a very diverse campus, as the campus being made up of mainly white Caucasians in which have a Christian background. This is a problem because students can’t develop their knowledge fully throughout the college experience due to the lack of diversity on the campus of SNC. Since the campus is mainly made up of white Caucasians, when dominantly the white population has near the same beliefs and values as one another, the students of white ethnicity don’t learn or be challenged by beliefs of other races or cultures. This happens simply because of the overwhelming majority of SNC’s population is made up of white Caucasians with the same beliefs, they don’t have the opportunity to acknowledge other beliefs or point of views or have much of a chance to learn these values in person. Alana Massey believes that diversity is a tool to help other students develop a better education: “It is time for universities to acknowledge their students of color as more than potential learning tools and diversity statistics for white students and brochures to brag about.” This can affect students by not allowing them to develop their knowledge by learning about new values and also it doesn’t allow them to test their beliefs and look at other’s point of views and cultural differences.
There are some ways that SNC is trying to solve the problem of the lack of diversity on campus. One solution that colleges have been using to try and increase diversity is to provide financial aid to students in need of it. Brian C. Mitchell believes that diversity is a necessary tool to help build a higher education: “Fourth, American colleges and universities must use their tools to build diversity — especially financial aid — in a more focused and creative way. Too many higher education institutions use financial aid as a way to fill their freshman class rather than meet their mission and strategic goals.” This quote explains why financial aid can be a tool to solve the problem of segregation in today’s colleges. This is a good way to help lure in people to enroll at a certain college. It allows students to have the chance of diminishing there intimidation tuition fee so it is cheaper for them to go to that college. This is a helpful tool because it helps out the not as fortunate students in being able to afford the very expensive colleges of present days.
Overall Diversity in schools can greatly benefit the students attending the campus by helping students develop their knowledge and test their beliefs. One way diversity benefits students is that enabling them to become conscious learners and critical thinkers. Brian C. Mitchell believes diversity challenges the claims that students believe and makes them think more critical: “They show greater potential for critical thinking, perhaps because heterogeneity of group members eliminates a problem termed ‘groupthink’ (Janis, 1982), an organizational situation in which group members mindlessly conform.” It allows students to learn from other points of views from various backgrounds, increasing their understanding of the topic and also generally improving their knowledge while learning many new facts. Another way being it will help Students learn more and think in deeper and more complex ways in a diverse educational environment. Last it will help Students be educated in diverse settings are better able to participate in political and nonpolitical events.
All in all diversity is a powerful tool that overall helps students develop their knowledge and test their beliefs in many ways. These ways being: enabling them to become conscious learners and critical thinkers, Students learn more and think in deeper and more complex ways in a diverse educational environment and Students educated in diverse settings are better able to participate in political and nonpolitical events. Diversity helps in so many ways for everyone, SNC must increase the diversity on campus to help students achieve their max level of intelligence.
